America's Badly Broken Education System
There is perhaps nothing more telling about the sad state of our nation than an in-depth look into how horribly broken our education system is. Great inadequacies can be identified at practically all levels within the system.
K-12 education is riddled with an enormous lack of proper funding for the greater majority of districts nationwide. School districts are forced to increasingly deal with less and less money within their budgets, and more cuts to vital services. Teacher pay has diminished, while working conditions have become more difficult and stressful for those wishing to remain in the field. Class size continues to increase, and as a result, teacher workload has gone up, while students find themselves with less and less one-on-one time with their instructors.
Programs in vital areas such as the arts are far too often first to go on the chopping block. Because of this, children are increasingly missing out on music, art, and the vital importance of personal expression from a young age.
Unfortunately, if children are lucky enough to grow up and make it through high school, college life poses no better a reality. In today’s world, a college education is unobtainable for a great percentage of Americans. The cost of attending higher education is beyond what many can ever afford to pay. For those who do decide to take the plunge, most will count on taking decades to pay off their extravagant tuition fees, some with little foreseeable future beyond a life saddled with student-loan debt.
Is this the America we wish to leave behind for our younger generations? Do we wish to live in an America which abandons its bright young minds to this wasteland of uncertainty? The future of this nation depends entirely on the intelligence of its young people. These are the minds that have the possibility to make, create, innovate, invent, and alter the future for the betterment of all Americans and individuals worldwide. To stifle this is to hinder our ability as a nation to progress into the great unknown which is our future.
We need an education system which works to cultivate all of our young minds, regardless of their economic or cultural backgrounds. Education has the power to inspire new ideas never before conceived. It has been the driving force in creating so many of the modern technologies and innovation we often take for granted in our society. The 21st century offers great hope and promise for all Americans, but only if we take the time to sow the seeds for the growth of future generations.
A worthy education should be the cornerstone of any successful society/culture. We cannot turn our backs on the youth of America’s future; we cannot ignore the vital importance of education within our nation.
